This change has led to a reduction in car accidents at the same time that cycling accidents have risen dramatically while we are in lockdown.

As the epicenter of the COVID19, New York City’s recent accident data may offer some insight into what other cities around the country will soon, experience:

Lack of auto traffic — Injuries related to automobiles such as auto drivers, passengers and pedestrians experienced a double-digit decline as New Yorkers first started changing their behavior to avoid contracting coronavirus. Even before the statewide stay-at-home order took effect on March 22, individuals and businesses seemed to cut back on unnecessary vehicle travel. Once state and local governments around the nation have installed tough restrictions on transportation, this only intensified. Insurance companies have been the real beneficiaries of this as the reduction in accidents has resulted in a windfall to the point some insurance companies are now refunding premiums to policyholders.

Increased bicycle riding — As people’s schedules instantly changed and became more flexible bicycle ridership increased during the first week of closures. Add social distancing to the mix which caused subway use to drop. The unfortunate part of this is that it has lead to a 43 percent increase in New York City bike accidents compared to the same time last year

Fears associated of social distancing on mass transit, taxis and rideshares — Its inevitable that the stay-at-home orders will be removed and many people will be returning to work, but fears over close quarters and shared spaces will be on everyone’s mind for quite some time. Many people that used public transportation, rideshares and taxis are going to reconsider these options and look into purchase their own car. This increase in vehicles will no doubt lead to increases in accidents no matter what city you are located in.

Whatever changes in transportation lie ahead, vehicle accidents will continue to happen. An experienced auto accident lawyer can help you understand the laws relating to fault and insurance claims..
